The Office of the DPCI Judge

Complaints Unit for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI)

The Office of the DPCI Judge Complaints Unit for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) has been established as an independent unit within the South African Police Services in terms of Section 17L of the South African Police Service Act, 1995 (Act No 68 of 1995) as amended. The Office of the DPCI Judge Complaints Unit for the DPCI's key responsibility is to provide an oversight role on the DPCI (HAWKS) environment.

In terms of Section 17l (4) of the SAPS Act, The Office of the DPCI Judge is now responsible for investigation of complaints from and against members of the HAWKS:

  • Category 1
    Complaints from any member of the public who can provide evidence of a serious and unlawful infringement of his or her rights cause by an investigation conducted by the HAWKS:

  • Category 2
    Complaints from members of the HAWKS who can provide evidence of any improper influence or interference, whether of a political or any other nature, exerted upon him or her regarding the conducting of an investigation.
The Office of the DPCI Judge is headed by a retired Judge and is based in Cape Town where the investigation arm is based in Pretoria. The retired Judge alternates between the Cape Town and Pretoria offices.
