Minister Mthethwa calls for Implementation of the NATJOINTS model to improve Policing.
01 April 2013

Our law enforcement agencies have once again proudly hoisted the South African flag when it comes to securing international events, following an incident-free 5th Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Summit. We are immensely proud of their dedication and hard work.  We are now challenging them to replicate this integrated approach towards improving the safety of our citizens going forward.
This is a sentiment expressed by the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa following the BRICS Summit which was held last week in Durban.  All security-related operations in relation to the event were coordinated through the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), together with their provincial counterparts in KwaZulu-Natal.

“We congratulate the NATJOINTS for a job well done and would like to see this working-together approach being translated to normal day-to-day policing.  Much as many law-abiding South Africans would also pat the entire team for a job well done, they would be justified in expecting the same improved policing on a daily basis.  It is after all our goal to ensure that South Africans are and feel safe, in their homes, at schools, at workplaces and various recreational areas.”

As government, we have invested huge human and state resources as well cutting-edge state of the art technology to complement our crime-fighting programmes, particularly within our Justice, Crime Prevention and Security cluster.  With the resources at our disposal as well as the NATJOINTS model that has enabled us to successfully secure over 500 international events, we should begin towards improved policing in general.
“Irrespective of how creative our plans are in dealing with crime, if they are not coordinated and integrated, success in the fight against crime is bound to be minimal.  We are also conscious of the fact our success in the fight against crime does not merely depend on sound domestic policies and programmes but our determination, as a collective to pursue them,” added the Minister.

Prior to the commencement of BRICS, Minister Mthethwa made a clarion call to all South Africans to welcome the visitors with warmth, humility and promote the spirit of goodwill that we are known for.  He further urged the law enforcement agencies to make the country proud.  Indeed our law enforcement agencies heeded this call, rose to the occasion and in the spirit of good ambassadorship, went beyond their normal call of duties.

“Today there can be no doubt about the determination of the overwhelming majority of the citizens of this country to take concerted action to help us liquidate crime.  This is the kind of perspective we expect and envisage in dealing with crime in South Africa.   It should therefore not be a government-only responsibility to tackle crime but all of us as patriots and law-abiding citizens,” he concluded.
